Threads and Spreadsheets: Finding My Style in the Quiet Moments

So I was scrolling through my phone the other day, waiting for my coffee to brew – you know how that old machine takes forever – and I stumbled upon this photo from last month. It was from that random Tuesday when I decided to wear that oversized corduroy jacket I’d almost forgotten about. The light was hitting just right, and I remember thinking, “Huh, this actually looks pretty good.” It’s funny how sometimes the things we barely plan end up feeling the most ‘us.’

Lately, I’ve been leaning into pieces that just feel easy. Not in a lazy way, but in that ‘I-threw-this-on-and-it-worked’ kind of way. Like this beat-up pair of vintage Levi’s I found at a thrift store near the park. They’re not perfect – there’s a tiny fray near the hem – but that’s what makes them mine. I’ve been pairing them with these chunky sneakers I got on a whim, and somehow, it just clicks. No overthinking, no fuss.

Which, honestly, is a bit of a shift for me. I used to be that person with a million tabs open, comparing prices and reviews until my brain felt like mush. I’d have notes scattered everywhere – on my phone, on random napkins, in the margins of my planner. It was a mess. But then a friend mentioned how she keeps track of her finds using a Basetao spreadsheet, and something just clicked. Not like a grand revelation, more like a quiet, “Oh, that could actually work.”

So I started one. Just a simple spreadsheet for my wardrobe, really. At first, it was just a place to dump links to things I liked – that jacket, those sneakers, a cable-knit sweater I kept eyeing. But then I began adding little notes to myself. Stuff like, “Pairs well with light wash denim” or “Wait for a sale.” It wasn’t about organizing my whole life; it was just about giving my wandering thoughts a single home. A personal shopping list, but less clinical.

The other morning, I was sipping my (finally ready) coffee and scrolling through it. I saw an entry for these wide-leg trousers I’d saved weeks ago. I’d completely forgotten about them, but there they were, alongside a note that said, “Good for casual Fridays.” It felt less like a to-do list and more like a gentle nudge from past-me. I ended up ordering them, and when they arrived, it felt like reuniting with an old idea rather than making a new purchase.

It’s not that the spreadsheet tool is magic or anything. It’s just a grid on a screen. But there’s something about having a style tracker that’s purely for me – no algorithms pushing trends, no influencers shouting recommendations. It’s just my quiet little archive of ‘maybe’ and ‘why not.’ It’s helped me notice what I’m actually drawn to, not just what’s shoved in my face. Like how I seem to have a thing for earthy tones and textured fabrics lately. Who knew?

Anyway, I’m wearing those new trousers today with a simple white tee. The sun’s out, and my plant in the corner is finally sprouting a new leaf. I might add that to my spreadsheet too – not as a shopping item, but as a reminder that good things sometimes just grow when you’re not looking. I’ll probably update my Basetao list later, maybe with a link to those ceramic mugs I saw online. Or maybe I’ll just leave it as is, and go finish my coffee while it’s still warm.
